Calling all Creative Technologists — SmallBox is Hiring!


We’re looking for a seasoned UI Designer & Developer who has a passion for helping mission-driven organizations and a knack for design and strategy.


As a well rounded and versatile professional, you have a firm grasp of both visual and technical principles, giving you the vision and skills to support a website from concept-to-implementation. Your experience creating easy-to-use and effective technology solutions and your passion for user journey will help our clients reach new goals and further their mission.

As the SmallBox Creative Technologist, you may find yourself coming up with a seamless online experience, deploying your coding skills, or prototyping a new wireframe for a client. And at the center of all of your work, you keep the needs and wants of stakeholders in mind. Because of this, you have a natural curiosity and sense of empathy that allows you to create solutions customized to specific needs.

Roles & Responsibilities

Planning & Prototyping

  • Apply research insights to demonstrate deep understanding of the client’s business, technical challenges and opportunities.
  • Create and refine solution ideas, and develop prototypes.
  • Participate in concept meetings and collaborate with cross-functional teams to build extensive project timelines, outline deliverables and clarify next steps that best serve innovative creative technology executions.

Strategy & Design

  • Use research insights to recommend design and technology solutions that will help clients achieve goals.
  • Deliver best-in-class user experiences and care about the small details to deliver visually stunning, accessible, and flexible designs.


  • Seek and explore new advancements in web design and new technologies.
  • Lead and contribute to the execution of client deliverables including website development, technology integrations, admin-friendly content management systems, etc.
  • Establish the company’s technical philosophy, objectives, and strategies to ensure quality, accessibility, and security.
  • Document development processes, procedures, and version histories.

Support & Trainings

  • Be a front-end ambassador and help educate and support our team members/clients on the best practices, approaches, and guidelines for developing and implementing digital experiences.
  • Perform ongoing site maintenance as needed; provide clients with end-user support and CMS training


  • Support the sales team serving as a knowledge expert to help close deals and serving as a liaison to interpret the client’s vision.
  • Participate in brainstorms and contribute creatively to new business proposals, bringing a creative approach to technology challenges and opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Subject Matter Expert — You should maintain a wide knowledge of website strategies and trends, and a proven grasp of UX/UI principles. Advanced proficiency in front-end and back-end development on WordPress and other PHP/MySQL based CMS’, along with a strong understanding of mobile responsive design and working knowledge of ADA compliance standards.

Creative — You will be a generator of valuable ideas and solutions for clients which requires a good balance of iterative thinking and analytical focus to arrive at the best solution. Your experience with design tools and principles allows you to also contribute to our visual work.

Inquisitive — You seek to first understand clients in order to uncover potential and drive the problem solving process. This requires a curious nature, and a willingness to learn. You must be willing to try out new ideas and experiment with new tools, and explore new technologies and assert your own ideas while working comfortably with the rest of your team.

Strategic — You are capable of seeing the entirety of a current project while striving to innovate and find creative solutions. Your creative problem solving and critical thinking capabilities enable you to create a strategic approach, developing user insights, and justifying technological decisions to meet project needs.

Organized — You must be extremely organized, both around tasks and communication, and have the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Self-motivated yet Collaborative — You have an ability to work individually and under pressure, as well as within a multidisciplinary team environment. With support from project managers, you have an innate ability to prioritize work and resources across engagements based on short- and long-term need.

Expressive Communicator — You have strong communication skills, written and verbal, and a unique ability to effectively present ideas to both technical and non-technical individuals.

Ideal Experience

Direct experience working with robust websites and diverse technologies
Creative agency, media agency, publishing, or brand marketing experience (5+ years)
Experience working with mission driven organizations
Presentation and sales experience preferred
