When I read today’s prompt, I immediately thought about how fun it would be to interview my 7-year-old daughter, Zoe, about her favorite moments of this past year. My Zoe-girl lights up the room with her beautiful smile and contagious joy. I can’t keep up with her creativity, and love (most of) her ideas. I love having conversations with her and was eager to hear about what her favorite parts of this past year have been.
Talking with Zoe reminded me yet again about how valuable and important it is to take time to reflect. It’s so easy to cross off another day or month on the calendar and miss out on celebrating the wins and accomplishments, as well as learning from the mistakes and disappointments. Reflection is a great way to benchmark how you’ve grown and changed as a person, not to mention a fun way to look back on special moments and memories. It also reminds me just how much I have to be grateful for.
As Zoe reflected on her year, here’s what she had to say about it:
What was your favorite accomplishment?
I wrote and illustrated (side note: “Mommy- tell everyone that’s a fancy word for draw.” She did indeed use the word “illustrate.”) my first book for a school project. It was even a hard-cover book with a Table of Contents.
What was your favorite adventure?
I got to ride a horse for the first time when we went to Michigan this summer. I also got to stay by myself – like without you and Daddy – with Grandma and Papa and my aunts and cousin for the week because I’m the big sister, and I can do that. The horse went so fast, Mommy.
What is your favorite new thing that you learned how to do?
I learned how to pack my own lunch for school, all by myself. But I still like it better when you do it.
What was your favorite craft project?
Fun Loom bracelets. I can make them really fast now. All my friends want me to make them bracelets. Tell your friends at work that I can make them bracelets, too.
Who is your favorite new friend?
Mia. She’s in my class AND she rides my bus AND she lives in our neighborhood. She’s really nice and funny. She’s probably my BFF. (Yep, she said BFF)
Any other favorite memories from this year?
I got a HUGE trophy at my dance recital this year because I’ve been in dance for 5 years. That was fun.
I loved hearing my sweet girl talk about her special moments from this past year. I smiled as I thought about the memories we made and am eager to take the time to personally reflect on my own year.
