In 2011, I started to worry about the amount of time I spend sitting in front of my computer. It probably should have hit me sooner than this. I was almost always connected.
The wisest choice I made this year was to audit how I work. They're nothing grandiose, but I hope these small efforts will allow more focus and creative energy for 2012 and beyond.
1. More walking.
I try to get up from my desk for a short walk everyday. Fresh air and getting the blood flowing have a huge impact on my focus once I sit back down.
2. More pen and paper.
I think having a pen in my hand fires different neurons in my brain. I have no idea if that's true, but if it helps the ideas come, I'm not going to question it.
3. Going dark.
This year I made an effort to put away the devices, not check-in and be more present in the moment. It's really hard to do when you work in a digital environment. I now prize the weekends I don't open my laptop at all. Small breaks make getting back to it more exciting.
