A Year of Wholeness

At the beginning of most of our projects at SmallBox, we walk our clients through an exercise we call the “North Star.” This exercise defines the main goal or objective for the project and helps create clarity and alignment throughout the various phases of work. It’s a great way to kick off a project and get both the client team and the SmallBox project team on the same page.

Last year I had the opportunity to attend a ThriveMap seminar conducted by one of my business mentors, CJ McClanahan. ThriveMap is all about goal setting and creating a plan & process for staying on track with your goals. Before we even started on our actual goals, CJ challenged us to think about our personal values to define our own purpose statement- the WHY behind the goals we set. He walked us through a personal North Star exercise, very similar to what we do with our clients. We defined our Greatest Strengths and Central Passions to create a two word purpose statement, and from there went on to create our goals, weighing each goal against that WHY.

It was a really interesting and meaningful exercise for me, but unfortunately I let myself get distracted by to-do’s and commitments this year that pulled me away from the purpose statement I had created for myself. I loved the simplicity of a two word statement and how much clarity it provided me when considering decisions about how and where I spend my time and what's most important to me. So with today’s Think Kit prompt, I decided to revisit my purpose statement and resolved to really, truly embracing it for the coming year.

My purpose statement is Nurture Wholeness. This resonates with me on many levels, both personally and professionally. I’ve always been a nurturing type. I find so much purpose in encouraging people, to walk alongside them through the twists and turns of life. It’s super important to me to be a consistent person, during both the seasons of celebration and the messy, hard seasons. Nurturing isn’t about fixing or controlling, it’s about encouraging and helping people see their value and potential. In my role at SmallBox, I want to be a mentor and an encouragement to my team, supporting them as people and as professionals.

I love watching people embrace their true passions and gifts and live life with purpose, which is part of the reason the word Wholeness also meant so much to me. The reality of life is that we all experience challenging circumstances that leave scars- mental, emotional, spiritual and even physical. These scars can get in the way of us living life to the full. They impact all aspects of our personal health and can be a roadblock to joy and contentment. I so desire to see people whole, to be healthy and able to enjoy and experience life to their fullest potential.

Wholeness is important at an individual level, but I also see great value in wholeness at a team and organizational level as well. Wholeness relates to how we work together, how we communicate and relate to each other, etc. It impacts our financial and cultural health. It allows for healthy conflict and accountability, instead of a toxic work environment filled with power struggles and gossip. A healthy team can accomplish far more than a fragmented, disengaged team. I’m thankful to be a part of a company that places such high value on cultural health and strives to create a healthy work environment for everyone.

In light of some challenges and frustrations from this past year, I’m eager to re-commit myself to Nurturing Wholeness, both in myself and the people around me. These words really hit at the core of what is important to me and I’m excited to see what this next year has in store as I live with this renewed purpose. Happy New Year!
